Practice

In Hergiswil Since 2011

Urologie Zentrum Hergiswil was founded in 2011 by Dr. med. Michael Oswald and Dr. med. Helge Hoffmann. In their group practice, they brought together the individual practices they had previously run in Stans and Sarnen.

Today we offer a broad range of modern urological medicine: from preventive screening and assessment to vasectomy and circumcision, through to MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsy of the prostate and minimally invasive treatment of benign prostate enlargement. Further areas of focus include operative urology, andrology, as well as the medical treatment of urological tumours.

Our Approach

Good treatment, for us, begins with careful diagnostics. We only recommend examinations and treatments that are medically justified and that we can carry out with the necessary experience and expertise.

Openness is part of how we practise medicine. We stand by our mistakes and speak transparently about the possibilities and limits of our experience. If a treatment falls outside our expertise, we refer our patients to appropriately specialised colleagues.

A Smooth Transition

On 1 January 2027, Dr. med. Maximilian Thomas will take over Dr. Oswald's share of the practice ahead of Dr. Oswald's upcoming retirement.

After professional stages including at University Hospital Düsseldorf, in Munich and at Aarau Cantonal Hospital, Dr. Thomas worked as a urologist in Basel, Rheinfelden and Liestal. He also worked as a visiting consultant at University Hospital Basel, GZF Rheinfelden Hospital and Merian Iselin Clinic.

Dr. Oswald will remain with Urologie Zentrum Hergiswil throughout 2027 as an employed urologist, ensuring a personal, carefully coordinated transition for our patients.

Our three doctors are supported by an experienced team of seven staff members.

Personal

What connects our three doctors beyond medicine is their love of nature, their ties to Central Switzerland, and a strong sense of humour.

Dr. Oswald lives in Lucerne, enjoys travelling and is an enthusiastic visitor of cultural and musical events. Dr. Hoffmann finds balance in mountain biking. Dr. Thomas has a passion for languages, travel and motorboating. Alongside his medical degree, he also studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Besides German, he holds consultations in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Polish.

Well Connected

We work closely with Spital Nidwalden, the urology department of Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, the St. Anna im Bahnhof Institute of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, and the medical laboratories Bioanalytica and labor team w.

To offer our patients MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsy of the prostate to the latest technological standards, we are working closely with InnoMedicus as our technology partner in introducing this precision diagnostic method.
