Prostate biopsy

If screening and diagnostics reveal a suspicious finding, we take targeted tissue samples from the prostate. We do this using an MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsy: previously acquired MRI images are digitally overlaid onto the live ultrasound, allowing millimetre-precise sampling from suspicious areas. We usually perform the biopsy transperineally (through the perineum) rather than via the rectum – this approach drastically lowers the risk of infection and sepsis and makes preventive antibiotics unnecessary. By combining general and local anaesthesia, we make the procedure as painless and comfortable as possible for our patients. Slight traces of blood in stool, urine and semen are normal and harmless for a few days to weeks afterwards. Important: please tell us beforehand if you take blood-thinning medication such as aspirin, Plavix or Marcoumar – these need to be paused in good time. Histology results are available after about 5–7 working days and are discussed with you in detail at a follow-up appointment.
