In ureteroscopy we examine the ureter and renal pelvis with a thin endoscope. The instrument is passed through the urethra and bladder – no skin incision is needed.
When is it performed?
Most often for stones in the ureter or kidney (see Kidney stones), and also for narrowings of the ureter or to investigate suspicious findings in the ureter and renal pelvis.
Procedure
The procedure is done under anaesthesia. Stones are broken up with a laser and, if needed, the fragments are removed with a small basket. To protect the ureter, a ureteral stent is often placed for some time and removed at a short second appointment.
Risks
Blood in the urine, urinary tract infections or discomfort from the stent may occur. Rarely, the ureter can be injured or develop a narrowing later. We discuss the risks with you in detail before the procedure.
