Unfulfilled desire to have children

In around 10–15% of couples trying to conceive, pregnancy does not occur within a year. Alongside well-known causes of female infertility, male fertility issues are present in up to 50% of cases – all the more reason for men to also undergo a thorough examination. After a detailed consultation, a physical examination with testicular ultrasound follows, supplemented if needed by a prostate assessment and hormone levels. In every case, a semen sample is required, analysed fresh according to WHO standards:

• No ejaculation for 4 days before providing the sample
• The sample should be obtained by masturbation
• Do not use lubricant; clean the glans beforehand with warm water, without soap
• The sample should reach the practice at body temperature within an hour
