Fluid collections can form in the scrotum. They are usually benign but can be troublesome because of their size and a feeling of pressure.
Hydrocele and spermatocele
In a hydrocele, fluid collects around the testicle. A spermatocele is a cyst on the epididymis containing fluid with sperm cells.
Assessment
First we clarify what it is with an examination and an ultrasound. For changes at the testicle, this also rules out findings that need further investigation (see Testicular cancer).
Treatment
If the finding causes no symptoms, observation is often enough. If it causes symptoms or keeps growing, it can be treated surgically.
Risks
Bruising, secondary bleeding, wound infections or recurrence of the fluid collection may occur. For procedures on the epididymis, we discuss possible effects on fertility with you beforehand.
